Named
for the magnificent sunsets visible from its Grecian columned veranda,
Westglow
Spa offers the best of both ends of the pampering spectrumaccommodations
in a Victorian mansion furnished in antique luxury combined with an
ultra-modern spa, equipped with every amenity and service.
Landscape
artist Elliott
Daingerfield built the Manor House as a summer home in 1916
and many of his original works, discovered in the attic, along with
original furnishings and Daingerfield's 2,500 volume library, grace
the mansion today.
Nearby, the state-of-the-art Life
Enhancement Center houses a complete fitness facility, glassed-in
pool, whirlpools, and sauna. A superior staff administers beauty treatments
from massage and body wraps to hair care and pedicures to both spa guests
and day visitors.
Healthy lunches are served on a patio overlooking the Blue Ridge, while
at night, gourmet meals low in fat, sugar and sodium are served in the
formal dining room at the Manor House. No rabbit food at Westglow.
Hound
Ears Lodge & Club is a more modern choice, and popular with
golfers. Its course is one of the most scenic in the mountains.
Mountain Lodgings
While
the area abounds in accommodations suited to every taste and pocketbook,
we've a few favorites.
Plan
ahead to spend a honeymoon, anniversary or romantic getaway in one of
the Pool Suites at the Meadowbrook
Inn, centrally located in Blowing Rock. Besides two huge
rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a jacuzzi tub for two, and a working
gas fireplace, each suite has a stairway that leads downstairs to its
own pool, so private that you can enjoy it au naturel if you
wish. Regular rooms and suites are luxurious here as well, with complete
pool and spa facilities. When you finally emerge from romantic seclusion,
everything in the village of Blowing Rock is just a short stroll away.
Just
outside Boone on the road to Banner Elk, the lovingly restored 1875
Lovill House is one of the area's premiere Bed & Breakfasts.
Lavish full breakfasts (served promptly at 8:30am) make a great beginning
for days spent exploring the mountains, or just lazing in a hammock
on the Inn's broad veranda. The Lovill House Inn received the AAA 4-Diamond
rating, one of only 5 B&B's so honored in the state.
Julian
Price Park, a few miles south on the Blue Ridge Parkway, provides
plenty of low-cost campgrounds, with many interpretive programs, but
few amenities such as showers.
